JSET exchanged the Memorandum of Agreement for academic partnership with the Association of Education Communications and Technology (AECT) in 2014, China Association for Educational Technology (CAET) in 2017 and Korean Society of Educational Technology (KSET) in 2018. Since the establishment of these academic relationships, JSET has promoted active exchanges of ideas and knowledge with these organizations. For example, over the past years, we have conducted the “Lunchtime Seminar” with AECT members and the “President Talk in International Session” with KSET and CAET members and become to further develop our understanding of research trends in educational technology in different countries.
Since 2018, we newly organized the “President Talk” as a constructive discussion venue among the scholars from each country to enhance our international partnership. At the President Talk, we invited one scholar from each organizations and asked these three scholars to share recent trends in research, theories and concepts, discuss specific issues in the field, and share case studies with new technologies in their own country.
This year, together with the representatives from the partner associations, JSET president prof. Horita will participate in the President Talk and share current research trends and important issues in educational technology in Japan. We believe that it will be a great opportunity to discuss the future of educational technology research and practice from a global perspective. Please join us at the President Talk!

Abstract In this presentation, the current trends in research and practice of educational technology, particularly within AECT, will be identified. Specifically, the diversity of research topics, research methods, publication venues, and research opportunities will be discussed. The discussion of the emerging trends for educational technology calls for a need to examine gaps and challenges within the association, which prompts us to reflect on our status of research, practice, and professional service in response to the dynamic changes of the digital society. Strategic planning has been developed, and the AECT goals and missions have been reviewed and evaluated to guide the Association’s strategic planning. The strategic planning involves (a) various professional development opportunities for our members (e.g., early career and mid-career professionals), (b) strengthening the organization with enhanced communication, collaboration, and transparency between the leaders and members in various divisions, committees, groups and affiliates, (c) connecting and collaborating with partners, such as international partners, industries, corporations, (d) leading the field and providing modeling with advanced research, theories, expertise, and professional service. Culturally situated research and practice are valued, encouraged, and promoted, with increasing attention to issues of social justice, equity, and inclusiveness. In the end, various assets of the organization will be reviewed, as well as its structure, functions, and purposes in support of the strategic planning and implementation as AECT moves into the near future.
Abstract The educational informalization is now coming to a new stage in China. As one of the important guidance documents for schools and universities to design and deploy their Smart Campus systems, the Standard of "Smart Campus Overall Framework" has been released in June 2018 in China, which was developed by CAET. In the past 3 years, a huge number of smart campuses were deployed in China, including basic facilities, data centers, core services, and various applications. It has been offered more efficiently, more conveniently, and safely for the teachers' and students' life. The future of the smart campus will be upgraded to a new level which is guided by the national strategy of the next 5 year's plan in China. The smart campus shows the features of studying "anytime, anywhere, and anybody."
Abstract The Corona Virus (COVID -19) pandemic has ushered in a new era in education. Technology is now being used by educators to teach, communicate, interact, and collaborate with students. Distance education via technology is common and accepted as a way to educate, not just an alternative way. Educators, students, and even parents are proficient in online education environment. It is well true in Korea.
Since the outbreak of the virus in February 2020, the community of educational technology in Korea was quick to respond the disaster and started to study on how the society, and especially educators handled the new challenges, resulting in a new research trend in this field.
In this presentation, a new research trend in educational technology field since 2020 will be summarized and discussed by analyzing the published articles on the journals in Korean. A short introduction on Korean Society for Education Technology will be presented at the beginning.
Abstract In 2021, Japan hosted the Tokyo Olympic and Paralympic Games. In the context of the COVID-19 outbreak, countries worldwide scrutinized the implementation of the Games and the measures taken to prevent COVID-19 infections. I would like to send my best wishes to all the athletes who overcame diverse difficulties to participate in the Games and fully demonstrate their abilities in their respective events.
Fifty-seven years have passed since the 1964 Olympics were held in Tokyo. The Tokyo Tower, the Shinkansen, and the Metropolitan Expressway, which are symbols of science and technology in Japan, were built at the time. Since then, Japan has maintained the same excellent social infrastructure and integrated the latest technology year by year.
Similarly, Japan maintains an excellent system of school education. Unfortunately, during the COVID-19 pandemic, Japanese schools functioned poorly, partially because of the lack of information and communications technology (ICT) environments and the lack of ICT utilization experience. This shows that we did not incorporate the latest technology at the appropriate points.
However, educational technology still contributes to maintaining online learning opportunities for students, particularly in higher education. Our national conferences and workshops are now conducted online, opening up new possibilities for conference management. Regarding primary and secondary education, the government provides an information terminal for each student at the stage of compulsory education and is exploring the hybridization of face-to-face and online classes. Currently, primary and secondary schools are following the educational technology practices used in higher education.
The pandemic might soon come to an end. Nevertheless, Japan will continue to live in the new normal with COVID-19. I find pleasure in promoting research on educational technology that supports learning in a society that continues to learn in cooperation with international academic societies.
